Helix CO2 Laser in Maine: Advanced Skin Resurfacing for Real Results

Helix CO2 laser resurfacing is one of the most effective treatments available for improving skin texture, wrinkles, sun damage, and acne scarring. At Atlantic Aesthetics in Maine, we use the Helix laser platform—a hybrid system combining ablative CO2 with 1570 nm resurfacing—to deliver deeper collagen remodeling and more meaningful, long-term results than non-ablative treatments alone.

What is Helix?

The Helix laser combines two complementary technologies:

  • Ablative CO2 (10,600 nm) → removes damaged skin and stimulates deep collagen remodeling
  • 1570 nm fractional laser → heats the dermis to enhance collagen production and support healing

This allows us to treat both the surface and deeper layers of the skin in a controlled, customizable way.

Why CO2 Laser Is the Gold Standard for Skin Resurfacing

CO2 laser remains the benchmark for true skin resurfacing because it does more than stimulate—it removes damaged skin and forces regeneration.

It works by:

  • Resurfacing the outer skin layers
  • Triggering a strong wound-healing response
  • Stimulating significant collagen and elastin production

👉 According to National Institutes of Health, ablative CO2 lasers produce the most significant improvements in wrinkles, texture, and photodamage due to their depth of tissue remodeling.

Helix Treatment Options: CoolPeel vs SULTRA vs Fusion

Helix is not a single treatment—it’s a customizable platform. We adjust intensity and depth based on your goals and downtime tolerance.

CoolPeel CO2

A superficial ablative CO2 treatment focused on texture and refresh with minimal downtime.

Best for:

  • Early aging
  • Mild sun damage
  • Fine lines
  • Maintenance

What to expect:

  • Light resurfacing
  • 1–3 days of redness
  • Subtle, refreshed appearance

SULTRA (1570 nm Non-Ablative)

A non-ablative collagen-stimulating treatment that improves skin quality without disrupting the surface.

Best for:

  • Skin tightening
  • Collagen stimulation
  • No-downtime patients

What to expect:

  • No peeling
  • Gradual improvement
  • Subtle tightening

Fusion (CO2 + 1570 Combined)

A combined approach treating both surface damage and deeper dermal layers in one session.

Best for:

  • Moderate to advanced aging
  • Acne scarring
  • Texture + laxity

What to expect:

  • More significant correction
  • Moderate downtime
  • Multi-layer remodeling

👉 This is where Helix stands apart—addressing multiple depths of the skin simultaneously.

Helix CO2 vs Fraxel and Other Non-Ablative Lasers

Non-ablative lasers (Fraxel, 1550/1570 nm, UltraClear):

  • Heat tissue without removing skin
  • Minimal downtime
  • Require multiple treatments
  • Limited correction for deeper damage

CO2 laser:

  • Removes damaged skin
  • Stimulates deeper collagen remodeling
  • Produces more significant, visible results

👉 Non-ablative treatments are useful for maintenance—but they do not match the level of correction achieved with CO2 resurfacing.

What Kind of Results Can You Expect?

Results are both immediate and progressive:

  • Initial improvement: once healing occurs
  • Continued collagen remodeling: 3–6 months
  • Long-lasting results with maintenance

Patients typically notice:

  • Smoother texture
  • Reduced wrinkles
  • More even tone
  • Firmer skin

What About Downtime?

Downtime depends on treatment intensity:

  • Redness and peeling: several days to a week
  • Temporary pinkness
  • Recovery varies based on depth

👉 The tradeoff is simple: more downtime = more meaningful results

Who Is the Best Candidate?

You may be a good candidate if you:

  • Have moderate to advanced sun damage
  • Want meaningful improvement—not just maintenance
  • Have acne scarring or deeper wrinkles
  • Are willing to accept downtime for better results

How We Combine CO2 Laser for Better Outcomes

FAQ's for CO2 Laser in Maine

Is CO2 laser painful?

Topical numbing is used, and discomfort depends on treatment depth, but overall people do very well with the treatment. We use a prescription topical numbing and can also do nerve blocks to help with pain. We offer Nitrous Oxide vs NitroNox device to help with pain and use a Zimmer chiller to cool the skin during and after treatment.

How many treatments are needed?

Many patients see significant improvement after one treatment, though additional sessions may be recommended. Cool Peel is a more superficial treatment, so 2-4 sessions are typically needed. Deeper treatments can be “one and done” but this is dependent on skin needs, healing, and aftercare.

Is there downtime with CO2 Laser treatment?

Yes, this depends on the depth of treatment. Cool Peel can leave just 24 hours of redness but an aggressive CO2 treatment can have 2-4 days of oozing, blistering, and swelling then 3-4 days of redness after this.

Is CO2 better than Fraxel or Lutronic Ultra?

CO2 provides deeper resurfacing and more significant results. Non-ablative lasers are better suited for mild concerns and maintenance.

Is CO2 laser safe?

When performed by a trained medical provider with proper settings and aftercare, CO2 laser is safe and highly effective.
